Biotech Symposia – Structural variant detection

When:
November 15, 2013 @ 12:30 pm – 5:30 pm
Where:
Gerald D. Fischbach Auditorium, Simons Foundation
160 5th Avenue
New York,NY 10010
USA
Categories:
This Biotech Symposium will focus on computational methods for detecting structural variants, which include large chromosomal insertions, deletions, inversions and translocations. Structural variants may cause both germline and somatic genetic diseases — such as inherited disorders and cancer — and contribute to human diversity and disease susceptibility.

Speakers:

Evan Eichler, University of Washington

Gabor Marth, Boston College

Sohrab Shah, British Columbia Cancer Research Centre

Eric Schadt, Mt. Sinai School of Medicine

Draft agenda:

12:30-12:45    Gerald Fischbach: Introduction to the foundation

12:45-1:00      Nicholas Socci and Doron Betel: Introduction to the symposium and speakers

1:00-1:50        Evan Eichler: Discovery and genotyping of human genome structural variation

1:50-2:05        Question and Answer

2:05-2:55        Gabor Marth: Discovery and analysis of mobile element insertion polymorphisms

2:55-3:10        Question and Answer

3:10-3:55        Break with refreshments

3:55-4:45        Sohrab Shah: Modeling evolution of the structural genome in cancer cell populations

4:45-5:00        Question and Answer

5:00-5:30        Eric Schadt: Update on Mt. Sinai Institute of Genomics and Multiscale Biology

Throughout the academic year, the Biotech Symposia provide a venue for discussing the latest technical approaches in life sciences, as well as new methods and algorithms in life sciences, genomics and data science, such as resting-state functional MRI. Past Biotech Symposia topics have included single nucleotide polymorphism detection and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging. The symposia are intended to inform and engage those interested in understanding and applying these techniques. New York City area faculty, postdoctoral and clinical fellows, students and technical staff are encouraged to attend. Guests are invited to meet the speakers and mingle during the mid-afternoon break.
